As boards navigate a landscape shaped by digital transformation, sustainability imperatives, and geopolitical volatility, the role of the non-executive director (NED) is undergoing a profound evolution. To mark the launch of the 2026 NED Awards, Board Agenda convened a panel of leading governance experts to explore what excellence looks like in today’s boardroom—and what it will demand in the future.
In a dynamic webinar titled The Future Board: Talent, Skills and the Next Generation of NEDs, moderator Gavin Hinks was joined by Ruth Cairnie, chair of Babcock and head of the NED Awards judging panel; Hounaïda Lasry, NED at B&M Retail; and Lesley Ann Nash, NED at Workspace Group and Homes England. Together, they unpacked the shifting expectations of NEDs and offered practical insights for aspiring directors.
The discussion revealed a clear message: boards need more than just experience—they need agility, curiosity, and courage. Ruth Cairnie highlighted the growing complexity of board responsibilities, from cyber risk and AI disruption to sustainability reporting and cultural oversight. “The breadth of what NEDs must manage has expanded dramatically,” she said, “and boards must reflect that reality.”
Continuous engagement
Lesley Ann Nash emphasized the importance of interpersonal effectiveness, noting that modern NEDs are increasingly called upon to mentor executives and maintain continuous engagement beyond formal meetings.
Meanwhile, Hounaïda Lasry stressed diplomacy and influence as key traits, especially in navigating ESG challenges and boardroom dynamics.
For those considering a nomination—or aspiring to join a board—the webinar offered invaluable advice. From understanding the difference between executive and oversight roles to cultivating the soft skills that foster trust and impact, the panel shared candid reflections on what makes a great NED today.
