The World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced that Nigerian economist Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will be its next director-general.
Okonjo-Iweala worked at the World Bank as a development economist for over 20 years and has served as Nigeria’s finance minister and as foreign minister—the first woman to hold both positions.
She is an independent non-executive director at Standard Chartered Bank, chair of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and chair of the African Risk Capacity Agency governing board. She is also on the board of Twitter.
Okonjo-Iweala will take up the WTO role on 1 March.
