A fresh debate on executive pay has been triggered in Germany after details emerged of the pension arrangements of Martin Winterkorn, the former chief executive of VW.
European business publication Handelsblatt reports that executive pay has become a political issue, with various leaders airing their views in the media.
Germany’s vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel (pictured), who is Angela Merkel’s deputy, was quoted this week in German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung saying: “We have to demonstrate clearly that we can set limits to greed.”
Handelsblatt quotes Volker Wissing, economy minister in the government of Rhineland-Palatinate, saying he is in favour of mandatory disclosure of “pay parameters for all senior positions”.
